what is hard clay? i remember a cattle farmer complaining about a 14 cec in western nebraska with 80% calcium. this is a very very broad topic, one mans clay just might be another mans sand. do you have a soil test to define your soil a little better? maybe even a subsoil soil test will help? your on the right tract but $25 for a soil test to make sure your putting the right stuff on is alot cheaper tehn putting on the wrong stuff.
