SESD Sious Falls | So, let's continue your line of thinking (but you have not concluded it yet, admittedly) the CIA, the Western powers, or some combination thought it was a good idea to overthrow the government of Ukraine and install a pro-western government.
For a skeptic like yourself, I would think you would question this line of thinking for a number of important reasons. 1) The West has no troops in Ukraine of any substance to secure the country when it is thrown into upheaval 2) Russia was looking for an excuse to annex the Crimea and now parts of eastern Ukraine. 3) Russia has the conventional forces and heavy weaponry in the area to take advantage of the chaos in Ukraine with little fear of Western interference 4) The overthrow of the government did more to help Russia than would have been the case if the existing government had remained in place. Russia could not have annexed the Crimea if the pro-Russian government had remained in place.
The bottom line is who had more to gain by the chaos created by the coup--the US and western powers or Russia. I think the answer is pretty clear that Russia had a lot more to gain. Furthermore, you would have to assume that the CIA was about as stupid as they come to think that it could overthrow the Ukrainian government and not open the door for Russian military intervention in a country with huge strategic interests for Russia. In addition, the huge portion of the populace that is Russian speaking and sympathetic to Moscow would have made this strategy all the more fraught with danger.
It is possible that the CIA just is that dumb, but it is far more likely that Putin took advantage of the situation and blamed the coup on the west. That is exactly what a KGB officer would consider as a good strategy.
