Even moisture is best, a tad on the dry side is better than a tad too wet. Mulch as others have said is a great thing for weeds and to keep moisture even.
Also check on varieties. There is determinate and indeterminate, long season and short season, and certain varieties are bred to have tolerance to certain diseases too.
