I'm sure you've checked this, but it hasn't been mentioned yet...

The system restore folder can take up a very substantial portion of the partition. I've reclaimed up to a quarter of the space in a partition by clearing it out, and then reducing it's maximum allotment of the partition down to something like 5% or so.
