SE IL and SW IN
Fall 2012 planted oats, radish rape, hairy vetch and cereal rye. oats got huge in the fall, crowding out vetch.
Spring 2013 had thick mat of oat residue and thin stand of rye that we terminated at 2" and planted corn.
Fall 2013 aerially seed oats rape crimson clover and rye, oats frost killed at 12'. 250# DAP 200 POT
Spring 2014 planted corn into thin stand of rye headed out at 4". 50#28-0-0 =ATS in 2X2 160#NH3

Yes, lots of carbon, not necessarily on purpose, just that legumes did not thrive in these mixes on these years. The plan was to replicate the "Jump Start" strategy of wheat followed by a multi-species mix but in a continuous row crop system. We know that we can do it with our continuous corn / hairy vetch strategy, but since we are only comfortable with a limited number of acres of that we were looking for alternatives.

My takeaway is that if we want to use this strategy, some manure that is not readily available here is probably going to be part of the equation.
