Subject: Tarping process made simple

East central Wisconsin
So, here is how we always did it, start to finish. From the beginning . Silo is empty, unloader is taken apart , serviced and oiled. Unloader raised, cable oiled and doors all in tight and in good shape. Fill it. Top it off next day and level it off . Clean off silo edges, unloader etc. ( never leave an unloader covered within a pile of silage as it can pull it down. It happens, seen it). So now that we are leveled off, we walk, ALOT. Two guys for like an hour. Just like you were packing a silage pile with a tractor. The more you walk and pack, the less you will have spoil. So now that you had your hour long chat with your coworker , bitchin about having to walk it down for the last hour, spread your tarp so it's centered,(we used tarps that were a foot or so greater in diameter than the silo size to compensate for the taper depth) Fold the tarp back about two to three feet, take your fork and fork out a n 18-24" taper down around the outer edge (that gets carefully placed on top of the tarp) Now with the tapered trench done, fold your tarp the rest of the way out , drag the silage you dug out back into the trench to hold down the plastic ( make sure plastic stays tight to silo wall) Make one or two passes around the outside of silo to pack your tarp in. Get out Your done. If you did it correctly , poked no holes, didn't walk on that tarp after you placed it, when you pull that off , you will have very limited waste, ( like a loader bucket or two at most, probably less) Rodents are not your friend. 80% of the time this worked! we tarped 5 or 6 a year just this way . Imperative that you do this tarping thing immediately after filling, you need the heat from the fermenting process to vacuume that tarp down. Good luck
