Subject: If you really want no waste

frederick, MD
Dig a small trench around the edge of the silo wall, cover the silage with a silo cap. Then drag a water hose up the silo and fill the trench up with water.

When you open the silo simply drain off the water with a siphon or punch a hole in the plastic and let it run into the silage. Then pull your plastic off and pray you don't have 6 inches of the heavy black looking mud stuff that the silo unloader won't blow out the door. Sometime you will have mud. Sometimes you won't. But either way, you will not have 3 doors of waste.

Fork the mud out, if you have it. It gets really tiring carrying silage mud across a 24 footer. Then once you get enough of the mud forked off that you think the unloader will handle it, go ahead and let the unloader down. Of course you will have left it down way to soon, so while the unloader is running you can fork out all the silage that didn't make it out the door. Hopefully you can work faster then the unloader makes a circle.

Then after you do all this, plus hoist a few motors in and out, replace belts, bearing etc, you will know why I don't use silos anymore.
