haskell county, ks
if you have resistant kochia, as we do in sw ks, better have a strong plan for weed control with milo. weed control is on of the drawbacks of milo over corn. milo has been a dryland crop for years here and some going into the limited water situations but trying to grow milo for more than about 2 years in a row con be very challenging. we are in the heart of milo harvest right now whereas have been done for a couple weeks with corn. hard to get started on harvest much before noon and rarely cut much after dark because of getting tough so need to understand added combine capacity if you are already stretched for corn just because of hrs of harvest time each day. now days are much shorter than 6 weeks ago. we are cutting milo that is flat on the ground that is making in the 60 bpa area which is pretty good for our dryland and that is challenging and slow. just some things to keep in mind. milo is a tremendous rotation for us on dryland with wheat/milo/fallow system. have some running up in the 80 to 90 bpa which is why makes a good crop on dryland. i know those yields sound low to the cornbelt but remember our rainfall and we are pleased with our crop. if could grow corn would not even give milo a look.
