Subject: Changing up the cropping plan - thinking of planting sorghum instead of Corn next year

Central NE

Anybody else considering planting sorghum on some of their ground instead of corn next year?

Before you reply, I am banning any discussion of itching from this thread.  That horse is dead.

With Syngenta viptera slowing down Corn exports to the land of $9 corn in China, and with sorghum being the non GMO replacement in high demand and carrying a premium this year...

Have some Round up resistant kocia appearing out of nowhere on a couple pivots that were in beans this year.  Always fighting cold no-till soils in early May yet... Maybe time to change up spraying time and planting time to Late May/ Early June...

Could try planting an oat cover and rolling perhaps?

$250/bag seed corn that plants 2.5 acres takes 33 bushels of $3 corn to pay for it and a bag of sub$200 Milo seed plants a bunch of acres...around 20 acres IIRC?  Don't have to keep refilling the planter much.

Dad grew 140bu milo on his worst dryland ground before, could a guy grow 160-200? on 200-230bu irrigated corn ground?...

Seems like a good way to fix this oversupply of corn, the milo demand, high priced corn seed, shake up the rotation, and go Gault while still paying the bills.  Maybe do some pheasant hunting next fall.

Thoughts?
