Michigan - Saginaw County | 80% is a magic number.
IF (big if) a significant fraction of farmers would fallow 20% of their land annually, the increased price of grain is likely to more than cover the missing 20%. of production
Now, I am going to do some fallow strips on one field. I have a 50 acre piece that was rental land for decades and is mined right out. I have drawn up a crop rotation for the next 5 years that fallows a 20% swath that steps across the field one year at a time.
I came to that conclusion when the first 2 years with the ground had disappointing results.
I do have to say that this years soybeans in that field have pleasantly surprised me.
I'm thinking that is the result of a lot of money I have put into fertility trying to revive this ground along with 3 years of COC to build OM.
Just this morning at coffee the guys asked how much wheat I'm putting in.
Told them I don't know enough to plant wheat.
That got a couple of strange looks - apparently the truth is confusing.
