Subject: RE: Tips for making Father/Son Farm Partnership work

Mid Michigan
I doubt he's going to have a lot of extra money to "throw" at the farm operation working a 9-5 job and supporting a family of 4. Most people earn about $44,000 in this country and if you take away rent, heat, car payment, car insurance, medical insurance, food for 4 people, clothes, etc. There's probably not going to be an extra bunch of capital at the end of the year to go out and buy that 12 row planter or sprayer or tractor or 40 acres down the road. It just doesn't work that way. Taking all your extra saved money and buying farm equipment instead of spending it on a vacation with the kids might put a huge strain on a marriage. To custom spray and custom fertilize you need a tremendous amount of expensive equipment and the profits aren't that great doing it. In the real world most americans couldn't afford 1 tire on a sprayer at any given time let alone the entire rig.
