My dad grows maybe 1/2 acre each year. I don't know about population, but maybe 20k? Just manure from his animals, no other fertilizer. It gets very tall, and stalks are not very strong. By the end of summer lots of stalks have fallen over. Very late to dry down, probably near November just to pick it. The ears can be very long, but maybe not as big around as modern corn. I'd guess it yields about half, if you can get it harvested. I'd think a chopper or electric fence is about the only way to harvest it cleanly. I think if managed better you could get more corn than what he does, but I'd be afraid if it was pushed hard even more would go down. And it doesn't go down like corn in the wind, it breaks at the ground and goes completely flat.
