EC Nebraska | This reminded me that I've not looked at those plots in a while, so I went out and took a few pictures. The open pollinated is already falling over, and very diseased. If you were to grow any, an at tassel fungicide application would probably be necessary. It's got nice ears on it, I took a picture of one that was already on the ground.
Just looking at this plot, I'd say 120-150 bpa is a reasonable open pollinated yield goal for my fields. With modern hybrids, my yield goal is 220-240 bpa.
You're not gonna save quite as much fertilizer as you'd like, because the open pollinated is not as efficient as modern hybrids. Probably apply about 75% of the fertilizer that you would for modern hybrids, and expect 60% of the yield.
