These "wrecks" are just a frustrating part of the stocker business. Even the best operators encounter them from time to time. My experience is the heat of summer is just as bad as the warm days/cool nights of fall. January thru May is when have had the least health problems. Don't have any real good answers. Just have to ride it out and stay the course. Possibly cut back thru end of year then step up in January thru May when health issues are usually better. In your area may be cold enough in December that health will be better. Having a good experienced vet to consult is a plus.
Getting calves out of dust onto some grass traps/pasture could possibly help. Also plenty of shade should help.
Also suggest budgeting for greater treatment expense and death loss in last half of year. | |
