SW Wisconsin | A attached garage in a cold climate with snow has some nice advantages like being out of the snow and wind when unloading the vehicle. We added a 28X32 garage to the side of our two story house, lost 2 windows on the west side of the house, had to move the AC unit, fuel oil pipe and dryer vent. When taking out the windows you get into messing with fixing the inside walls plus you have to add a door going to the garage. Have to be careful when putting in the door that you don't have wires in the wall. Code requires 5/8 inch fire retardent sheet rock on the wall against the house. We had to cut through the overhang on the roof to make the garage tall enough so we could have 9' ceilings in the garage. I've seen garages built separate from the house with a breezeway between that would eliminate lots of additional work and still give you the advantage of being in out of the weather. When we did our garage we gutted the downstairs at the same time or I would never have added the garage due to messing with the interior walls. Best of luck with your project! | |
