I think of the mundane things like groceries and little kids. Carrying either one in from a detached garage involves opening/closing 2 walk-thru doors. Do you leave kids in the car and carry in groceries or take kids in and go back for groceries? How far is the hike from the detached to the house? What direction is the prevailing wind in relation to the directions you'll be walking?  All things to think of in making this decision, IMO. Only you can decide.
