Carroll, OH | +1 on planting green and then terminating. We have excellent success with crop roller after planting when the rye is pollinating. If we miss anything a quick pass with glyphosate or other burn down herbicide should do the trick. Allowing the rye to get tall will prevent marestail and pigweed most of the time, and as Kirk says, helps keep the soil cooler in the summer. For us, the growing rye also respires the moisture out of our clay soil so there is no problem planting. Just know you will be planting a little later. We never liked spraying the rye days or weeks ahead of time due to spring moisture and the stems being a gooey mess to plant through. | |
