How relative are seed test plot results compared to whole field results?

Most of the time plots are planted on the best ground to achieve the highest yields. I just compare the varieties within those plots and better yet, if you can compare several plots with the same varieties your looking at, the best ones should be consistently at or near the top. The yields don't really matter to me...it's the difference and consistency among varieties.
