Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | Word on the street is that at least some organic producers have very strict deadlines for when spray applications can be made so that nothing will show up when tested at harvest to meet organic specs. See the post way above about organics turning some people dishonest.
I wonder about water and meeting organic rules also. The surface water we use for irrigation is treated with chemicals to control algae and aquatic plant growth in the canals. The stuff is bad enough that the irrigation district calls livestock guys to let them know the chem dates to keep the cows from drinking canal water at that time. How is it OK to irrigate with that water??
There are so many double standards and permissable compromises in organics that is just about makes me sick to think about, especially concerning one local organic farm owned by an especially large (and dubious) corporation.
