Near-north Ontario, French River | Those types of yields aren't common here, but far from rare. Putting N on in the fall is rare here, although some will put some MAP down , more for the P then the N. Plant early and getting your spring N on in a timely fashion is important. Hate to say it but the most common denominator for high yields around here seems to be minimal winterkill and timely rains, both of which for the most part are out of your hands. Spring fungicides aren't really that common here but an application at flag leaf or heading seems to be more common. There is a theory out there that fall N can actaully hurt yields/increase winterkill because it promotes alot of top growth vs root growth in the fall, thus depleting crown reserves leading to a slower start in the spring, can't really prove that though its just what some have claimed. |
