Near-north Ontario, French River | FWIW.. the three times I've hit the century mark in wheat, I didn't do anything really special. 90 lbs of N , as UAN, applied in one shot in late april/early May, followed by a single fungicide application at heading. It all came down to rainfall at the right time. FWIW that's also the typical program for most guys around here, very few if any are doing split N apps, or the other intensive management things that ED is suggesting. Not saying ED is wrong, the program obviously works for him just not sure it would really improve the odds of hitting the century mark in your yield goals. It might just come down to soil type, wheat prefers adequate but not excessive moisture at heading. In our area that means wheat will often produce its highest yields on heavy clay for the simple reason that the clay will retain moisture into mid-june when its most critical, sandy soils often lack moisture by then and the yields suffer because of it. Not uncommon to see yield differences of 20bu/ac between two fields in which identical practices were followed. |
