In those days there were no integrated timer facilities, so games and other applications that required specific time delays relied on program loops that made enough iterations to give the proper delay. Increased clock frequencies put everything in fast forward motion, so PC makers put a clock divider circuit in the machine with a switch so their machine could remain compatible with legacy software.
I thought of this after I posted, but it was a work computer so no games were played on it. I do remember the first computer I bought I believe was 16Mhz, and I recall having a few games where it was too fast for them. |
