I had two crew cab Z-71 pick ups like you mention. Both were great pick ups. One was a 2005 with the 3.42 rear end, the second was a 2007 with the 3.73 gears, fuel mileage was 15-16 on both but the 2007 felt like it was geared better. I would stay away from the higher gearing, especially if you ever pull anything.
