Grand Rapids, MI | I think in general the remote online storage are a fantastic idea. They have their limitations, however, to be aware of.
The first limitation is that most back up certain types of data files only. If you rely on your computers like we do in the office and can't be down for a day or so, I think you would want to look at something that images the entire drive, to make recovery quicker. Our server and all desktops are set with RAID arrays for this purpose, hard drives can fail and we have no downtime.
The next limitation is that many of these online services only keep the latest version of each file. This becomes a problem, for example, whth a file such as our huge (500MB+) GIS database file. If this file gets corrupted and it is not caught, the corrupted file will be uploaded and replace the good one. I think the better online services keep multiple versions, dating back some period of time, be sure to check for this. | |
