Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

Any trouble getting hi-speed I-net?

Yes there is, in this area. The 3 copper mile limit on DSL severely limits the number of users that make the distance limitation. One of the tel co-ops has started making wireless hi-speed available off their cel towers, but territorial integrity issues with other co-ops, preclude some from getting the service. A relatively populated cel tower area has three towers in a 50 mile span. There are many places here, that are within 6 miles of a tower and are still unable to get a good enough signal. Then there is the strip of territory that's just south of the Canadian line. Cel towers that are 12 miles south of the line, need to use highly directional antennas that point away from the line, so they don't pollute Canadian radio spectrum. That is an international treaty stipulation, so until Canada and the US come to an understanding, the folks that live in that area won't have wireless and even if treaty issues were settled, there aren't enough towers to come close to serving everyone. Population density there, makes running fiber the last mile rather cost prohibitive. It is being done in some areas though, as the co-op upgrades their old Cu lines.

We can actually count ourselves lucky here; that we even have electricity and LL phone. Had it not been for REA subsidies and low interest loans, we'd have neither.

The idea that everyone in the USA can pull together to help the less populous areas, and in turn benefit the whole country, seems to have fallen out of favor and is commonly labeled as Communistic or Socialistic, these days, so not much will get done in the less populated areas today.
