Second that plant produced and sent far more carbon underground to soil microbes during its life than are left in its husk of a carcass. The microbes fed by this some of them become soil organic matter.
Third invertebrates like earthworms physically carry above ground organic material below ground and after its been digested some of that cold become organic matter.
Fourth by not introducing oxygen further into the soil by tillage you limit microbial breakdown of stable soil organic matter.
