EC Nebraska | That 60 years of topsoil left has been thrown around for a while. It's more or less figured by taking the pre-settlement levels, comparing them to current levels, and drawing a straight line through it. That's a little over-simplified, but not much.
It doesn't consider changes in farming methods over the last 30-40 years.
And it's a meaningless statistic anyway. There are many acres where the original prairie topsoil has been gone since before I was born. They're still very productive acres today. They need more sulfur and phosphorus than the acres that weren't eroded, but they're stable now and they will continue to produce as long as we have diesel fuel, fertilizer, and pesticides.
Of course, those might not last 60 years, so. . . . .
