SW WI | Here….in the driftless region of WI, the old guys had it right. Alternating narrow strips of Hay, corn, other small grains. Permanent pasture. Small dairies that relied heavy on hay, less on corn or corn silage.
Broad brush view….but mega dairies with their need for corn silage. Not much cover even if you reseed to a fall cover crop. Small dairies pushed out and now crop corn and beans, no hay.
I’m guilty to some extent, also.
I have no idea how to make what we did in the past, economically viable enough to make a living, even though it would be best for the land. | |
