Subject: Cultivating corn in 1948 pic

Beresford SD
This picture is my Dad cultivating corn with 8N Ford in 1949 with 2 row rear mounted Ford cultivator. This field appears to be "hill dropped" 4 to a hill. About 16,000 population. It may also have been "checked" to allow cross cultivation. Checking was done by having long spools of check wire with knots at 40" increments which would trip planter to drop 4 seeds at a time into a hill. Each time you got to the end of the field you would stop, unhook check wire, turn around again , hook up check wire and go to the other end of the field and repeat this process all the way across the field. This would allow you to cultivate the first time one way and then cultivate the next time cross ways thus getting the weeds in between the hills. I never did this so if someone can add to this or correct me please do.
