Thumb of Michigan
Had some friends from Fairgrove coming up on motorcycles for an event in Escanaba. They booked a room in Happy Rock (Gladstone for the un initiated). They wanted to know directions to the motel. No problem, says I. Make a left after the bridge on US 2. Proceed to the second stop and go light, make a left. Motel is right there. Got some odd looks from them. "I thought you said it was almost 140 miles from the bridge?" Yep, that sounds right. 'Well, second light past what town?" St Ignace, of course. They really didn't believe me until they got to the second light. Reservations were ready at the motel to the left.

My wife, when taking drivers training, had to drive from Munising to Marquette to practice on stop and go lights. 50 miles to see a light. Since then, they added a couple lights in Munising, for the tourists I guess. Those are now disappearing in favor of traffic circles. I like traffic circles, but that feeling isn't universal.
