SW Ohio
We have lost/thrown away almost all the "dust retainers" on our hydraulic connections. Standard equipment on all our tractors and implements with female couplers are a basket-can-toolbox to hold several aerosol cans of brake cleaner, every hose and receptacle gets a wash down before coupling, no ill effects in decades. The worst culprits are the newer 7xxx and 8xxx with the rubber covers that trap dirt very effectively.

To the original poster (OP), if your implements use the same style fittings you already have on the tractor ("old style JD"), skip the covers and just clean them before use and don't convert to ISO/pioneer style, conversion can get expensive with many hoses to change. If some of your stuff is ISO go ahead and change.
