In my mind, I-80 is a death trap on wheels. I know the accident rate actually is probably very low, but it's a nerve-wracking trip whether east bound or west, and when there is a wreck, it's usually monumental. Truck traffic is incredible. Personally, I'd take 30 in a heartbeat. Nice views, decent road and you don't have to be on defense every second of the trip. FWIW.
80 west of DSM is fine once you get 15-20 miles out of DSM. There’s still traffic but it’s not nearly as congested.
80 east of DSM isn’t the most relaxing road to drive on
US 30 or I-80 across Iowa
