Subject: Relationships - most important

I think investing in relationships with others near you would actually be the best investment. Having friends/family with a wide range of skill sets that can work together to keep each other alive. Gold is worthless - you can't eat it. Storing food will end up being a waste because if you need it 20 years from now half will be bad. Isolation is not appropriate because unlike our current world you would need people to help you survive.

Do you like fiction? There is great series written by S.M Sterling called the Ember Series. It tells the story of the world in 1998 being thrust back into the Bronze Age - losing electricity, firearms, explosives, internal combustion engines, steam power and most forms of high-energy-density technology. Now this story is more extreme than you are speaking and fictional. However, it does give an interesting post-apocalyptic idea of what it would take to survive if something apocalyptic happened.
