The Deep Furrows of Eastern WA
My grandpa was born in 30. Said during the depression they would eat dried apples for breakfast, drink water for lunch, and swell up for dinner. He told me a story about when he got out of the Navy his dad asked him if he would consider working in agriculture; as it was a fulfilling career. His dad was a farm hand who had worked all through central Washington. Grandpa told him that he had seen him and his mom struggle with no two nickels to rub together and he wasn’t going to do the same. He ended up working at a concrete company dispatching mixers. I’ve heard plenty of stories of how you could order what mud you wanted and when you wanted it, but he would tell you what you were getting and when you were getting it. We lost him in 2015, thanks for letting me take this trip down memory lane.
