In The Chevrolet Racing Engine, Bill Jenkins does a good job of explaining how cylinder pressure also aids in providing ring tension against the cylinder walls. He was able to reduce ring tension to near zero because of this. As far as the piston exerting load on the cylinder wall, of course it does. That is what the piston skirt is there for.
