Thats is a great explanation, but I still have a question. Isn’t it the case that the force in your example that returns the piston to BDC is not only compression alone, but compression plus fuel (cylinder firing). If the throttle is let off, and fuel removed, isn’t the force that returns the piston to BDC also removed? In effect, taking away the spring at TDC just like your Jake brake example, which would result in the engine absorbing energy?
