In my area I know some have run into issues with the building inspector not approving if not stamped from a saw mill saying they can't tell if it will meet requirements or not. I believe a full 2x12 would handle the load. What the local bureaucracy believes is a different story. Kind of like a DOT enforcement officer. They all have their own spin on something.
