A lean to on a barn is a whole different animal if the roof above drops a load from a much higher level. Hardwood is going to take this load better than store bought softwood, even doug fir or southern yellow pine. 2x12 ash will go 14 on 4' centers easily, until you get that one perfect storm, but how long will that take? It might even be more an issue of attachment points than breaking strength at that point.

As an example, I knew of a similar lean to with 2x6 pine 24" on center that stood for a couple decades. the 2x6's were scabbed together in the middle! and I think the outside wall pulling away contributed as much as the weakness of the rafters. this was a south side lean to with the main barn roof at least 12' up.
