It is true, the aluminum ones shouldn't be put in the dishwasher if you want the handles to stain shiny. Basically, the low phosphorus of the dish soap and the ultra high temperatures are what cause the discoloration. We are actively working on a solution so that the dulling effect is eliminated or slowed down considerably.
Any of the sets are a good addition to the kitchen. If you aren't concerned about having them in the gift box and are just going to put them into the drawer, money can be saved by just buying the individual knives separately and forgetting about the gift set.
