We recently were informed by the short line that serves our feed mill that the way we have always moved rail cars (Ford 8000 weighted to the max) is no longer acceptable. They recommended that we get a rail car mover or pay loader with a knuckle on it. The problem with that is that we only receive 8-10 cars per year and the cost of the new hardware just is just too much.

What id like to counter offer is that we mount a knuckle to the nose of the 8000 and set up a pto or hydraulic driven air compressor so we have control of the brakes.

The question is How much air would a string of 2-3 rail cars need to maintain control? I’ve read a few white papers on how the actuating valves work and think I have a handle on that, just unsure of the volume.

A few questions I would want answered before making a change.

1) Who owns the spur that you are using, you or the railway company?
2) What does the regulation say? Does it apply to your situation?
3) When does said regulation come into force?
4) Will rail company give any guarantee of continued service, or is this just a way of phasing you out?
5) Is this just about liability insurance?
