Subject: RE: Rail car moving

Northern Alberta
"Back in the day" we used a winch at the elevator to move cars, vertical spool with a 2" rope, wrap the rope around several times and pull. Of course there were permanently mounted on concrete block and run with electric motors. At some of the older sidings we had no winch and used a car jack. Was a PITA if the track had highs and lows in. Would jack like a mad man when the track had a bit of a rise in it then run like hell to apply brakes when it topped the crest.
