Subject: Tractor/Manure Spreader Questions

North East Texas
Right now my old man and I are running two chandler spreaders handling mostly dry and moist broiler litter/"cake". We have been presented with the opportunity to custom spread some pretty wet layer manure and possibly some pen pack type stuff from feedlots. Would a spreader like a Meyer 9524 with S100 attachment spread this other material evenly? This layer manure has a consistency similar to paste or mud. There isn't water running out of it but when its piled up in the field it will kind of settle out if that makes sense. Everyone around here that spreads it uses similar spreaders as us and has hell getting it to spread. Amount of work would be 8k-10k tons at least not including our own spreading which varies from 1k-2k+ tons a year.

Any other spreaders that would fit the task? Needs to have brakes, scales, ect.

Now on to the tractor questions....

What size tractor would you fellas recommend for the above mentioned Meyer spreader? We have narrow roads so duals aren't in the equation. We want 30+mph road speed so we won't have to hire trucking quite as much plus we could use it for moving bales around during hay season. Would 250hp handle that spreader loaded at higher speeds on the highway? Do we need something closer to 300hp? We do have some hills so that is a factor too. Stopping fast is important to us as well as going fast lol! We have room to grow in other aspects of the farm so we have been looking to get into a bigger tractor than what we currently have.

Lastly, who in NE Texas services Challenger or Fendt tractors? Any independent mechanics familiar with them running around? We currently run John Deere but are pretty disappointed with United Ag&Turf. Seems to us they would rather sell utility tractors and lawn mowers!

Thanks in advance!
