Iowa | I'm guessing he did not want the investment and upkeep of that many bathrooms. The water use argument, although bogus, could be what he thought would be the most convincing to his wife... or maybe he really believes it. I guess it could sometimes increase their water use with the probability of more toilets to leak.
Some people are really hung up on water use. People in town get a monthly water bill, but it does not mean much out in the country with our own wells and plenty of rain. People in arid urban areas, even people who should know better, can't seem to get their heads wrapped around the idea that water use is not such a big deal in other parts of the world. They freak out when they find out how much a steer drinks or how much it takes to grow an acre of corn in Iowa, as if that is depleting their water supply in California.
