Subject: RE: batteries for electrical storage

NE WI
I remember back in the day an electrical engineer friend telling me when he interviewed at American Superconductor they were experimenting with superconductor coils storing massive amounts of energy to be used to boost transmission lines in brownout condition. One of the engineers there pulled a table out from under a manhole cover next to one of the charging coils. The manhole cover slowly levitated to the ground and by the time it reached the floor it was red hot. The magnetic lines of flux were that strong.

One other energy storage method is supercaps that use graphene mesh. They can be charged extremely fast as they have extremely low ESR. However balancing of the cells during charge/discharge is very important. One cell overcharges and it vents opening the series bank of caps with no safe way to discharge it. Some warehouse robots use this technology as a battery. Can run 15 minutes on a charge and be recharged in seconds. The battery is 22” long by 5” wide, and 5” tall and can store 47kJoules of energy.
