If I were you I would grid sample one field on one acre grids and 2.5 acre grids and see how much they vary.

I usually use 2.5 acre grids but did some single acre grids this year and was surprised at how much the lime application varied.

For me, on my ground, grid sampling pays every time. Whenever yield varies the nutrients pulled out of the ground also varies. In one pass with the combine in the fall I can see yields go from 180-280 on the same pass. I obviously need to apply more fertilizer where I pulled off 280 as compared to 180. If I just flat rate that pass some area is getting too much for replacement and some too little. I want to put my money where it needs to be.
