Was the cow bright eyed or dull? Was she stiff and sore when you walked her? Does she stagger? Do all the cows eat at the piles of grain? Are the cows in good shape? Condition score? Size? Temp would be infection of some sort, grain overload usually does not increase temps and causes them to go hypothermic. feeding 3.5 lbs a day would not cause grain overload, but 15, would if she may have gotten that. If it is cold and they are thin they will go hypothermic, Energy and fat cover provide insulation. Even if they are in decent shape, if they are not getting the energy in the cold, they will go hypothermic. that may be a cow that cannot get up, staggers, wants to lay down etc. Once the temp gets so low, you cannot bring them back. Twine ball in stomach? Many causes as to why cows die unexpectedly, as people do. I wish I could control them all, but unfortunately, live cows sometimes also mean dead cows.
