Subject: RE: Gypsum or ammonium sulfate

"Here", CalSul(Gypsum) is the most expensive source of Sulfur(.99/#S), followed by AMS(.62/#S) and then Thiosul(.52/#S) as the cheapest. What about putting on thiosul with your pre on beans? If my math is correct there is about 2.87#S/gal Thio. 20# sulfur/acre would be 7 gallons Thio/acre. Does Thiosul mix with say a Sonic/MTZ program with no issues? 7 gal. Thio would get you 9.28# Nitrogen also. 100# AMS would get you 24# S and 21# Nitrogen. How much nitrogen is too much for soybeans??? Gypsum would have about 20#/acre S at the 118#/acre applied rate with no nitrogen. Which route is best? Been side dressing 5 gal. Thiosul with my UAN on corn for a few years now....use to spread AMS and think better results with the Thio. Was told a guy should be putting 15-20# Sulfur per year on every crop. Have not been using any sulfur on beans and want to try this year but do not want to deal with too tall/rank lodging soybeans due to excess nitrogen issues. Thanks for any input!!
