Late lactation jerseys, I graze in summer and I've been breeding for components over milk for several years. 22 lbs is quite good for this time of year, as far as I'm concerned. I'll be drying off the whole herd in January, and calving again mostly in March and April. They peaked just over 50 lbs/ day in early June.

I did check on monensin, USDA approved it for lactating cows in TMR in 2004 and for top dressing in 2005. I thought the same as you, but several good sources on the internet say it's ok.

I ran short on grain, they were never out of forage or water.

Its not quite clear if you've still got some good grazing.

When you have great grass (by feed tests!!!) why not dump the grain.

You increase in MF %age is likely due to high quality forages.
I have found forages when their feed value is in the right area even better than using straight grain.

I understand that almost everyone else in North America believes that you have to have grain to get great milk production.
I KNOW that I can do that without grain - - - - - but you need to have upper end forages and enough of them.
