SW Wisconsin | Late lactation jerseys, I graze in summer and I've been breeding for components over milk for several years. 22 lbs is quite good for this time of year, as far as I'm concerned. I'll be drying off the whole herd in January, and calving again mostly in March and April. They peaked just over 50 lbs/ day in early June.
I did check on monensin, USDA approved it for lactating cows in TMR in 2004 and for top dressing in 2005. I thought the same as you, but several good sources on the internet say it's ok.
I ran short on grain, they were never out of forage or water. | |
