Subject: RE: Making lumber

southern MN
My dad helped a neighbor, maybe also relative, with a sawmill in his teens. I believe, think of the scenes from Walton’s Mountain and that was the era and equipment I think...

He really seemed to enjoy those memories, and was always interested in having a sawmill, but never got there.

I kinda share his interest in it, and likewise never acted on it.

I just love watching the old sawmills at the steam tractor shows, and the new band mill demonstrations at the farm shows. Well, in past years, nothing this year. Sigh.

It seems so neat to start with a rough old log, and end up creating something useful out of it, as simple as the process is there is a lot of talent too.

I view it as ‘useful art‘, making good lumber out of whole trees.

Cool stuff.
